Updated On : October 12, 2009 A consortium of Italy's Saipem and South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction has been awarded the EPC contract on this scheme. The contract covers supply of licences, engineering, procurement, construction and start-up of a complete granulated urea production plant along with associated utilities and offsite units. This project is in Qatar and is known as Qafco VI. The client is holding direct negotiations with Italy's Saipem for the EPC contract, which is currently building Qafco V. By retaining Saipem to build the sixth phase, the client hopes to reduce the costs of this project to about $3 billion and also avoid a lengthy tendering process. Client is keen to push ahead with this scheme so it can use the ammonia produced by Qafco V as feedstock to make more urea.

A joint technical committee is drawing up pre-qualification documents, expected to be released soon, for an international design and supervision consultant. There are also plans to invite companies to pre-qualify for a project management consultancy role. (15) international companies have submitted pre-qualification bids for this project. The client had short-listed seven companies to bid for the phase I consultancy contract, which includes environmental, engineering and traffic studies and site investigations as well as the preparation of three design options. The bidders were understood to include UK's Ove Arup & Partners; Sweden's Skanska, with UK's Mouchel; Danish consortium headed by COWIconsult and UK's Hyder Consulting. The four-strong Danish consortium, headed by COWI has been awarded a $7.4 million contract. The contract period is 10 months. COWI will be assisted by water modelling specialist DHI Water & Environment, architect Dissing & Weitling and Sund & Baelt. Phase II of the project will involve detailed designs and preparation of tender documents, while phase III covers construction works.
